A PlanningAlerts alternative for property professionals

Professionals looking for a PlanningAlerts alternative usually need more than a list of nearby applications. PlanningAlerts is a free public service for knowing what is being built near you and having your say. PlanInsight is a paid tool for professionals who need the DA history of a specific lot alongside title, overlays and a CAD file. Different jobs, both useful.

Prices and features checked September 2026 on the public websites linked below. Check their sites for current terms.

The short version

PlanningAlerts, run by the charity OpenAustralia Foundation, collects planning applications from council websites across Australia. Anyone can search for applications within 2 km of an address, sign up for email alerts and post comments for the council to consider. It is free and built for the public.

PlanInsight starts from the lot rather than the neighbourhood. You see the applications lodged on a property together with its title details, zone, hazard overlays, BYDA plans and a DXF for CAD. It is built for surveyors, engineers, planners and anyone who has to act on the answer.

When PlanningAlerts is the better fit

If you want to know what is being built around your home and tell the council what you think, PlanningAlerts is the right tool, and it costs nothing. Its public comments feature has no equivalent in PlanInsight.

When PlanInsight is the better fit

A professional usually needs more than a list of nearby applications. You need the history of one lot, its status and decision dates, and everything else that shapes the job: the zone, the overlays, the services in the street and a file you can draw on. PlanInsight puts those in one place.

FAQ

Questions

Is PlanningAlerts free?

Yes. It is a free service run by the OpenAustralia Foundation, a registered charity, and funded by donations. Its API has a free Community plan for non-commercial use and a Standard plan listed at $3,850 plus GST a month.

Does PlanInsight have free DA alerts too?

No. DA notifications are part of the paid plans: bookmark a property and you are notified when a new application is lodged on it or a tracked application changes status. For free alerts around an address, PlanningAlerts is the right tool.

What is the difference in how alerts work?

PlanningAlerts finds applications within an area around an address and lets anyone comment publicly. PlanInsight is organised around a lot: the applications lodged on that property, linked to its title, overlays and CAD file.

Can I use PlanningAlerts data commercially?

Its API page lists paid plans for commercial use. Check the PlanningAlerts API page for current terms.

Which councils does PlanInsight cover?

More than 250 councils, listed on the PlanInsight coverage page, with DA data fetched from each council's own system.
